It worked. (sultry guitar solo) - Come on! Come on! (screams) Yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah! Watch it! Yeah, you know my mom wanted me to get married, have kids. Joe and I felt that Ultimate Frisbee would be too dangerous for a lady.

(inspirational music) We made the cover of Disc Weekly, the Frisbee Journal, Spokane Quarterly Farmer's Almanac. But, we took that fun activity and we made it into an intense, no holds barred, winner take all competition! - People would be like, 'Don't think think you're taking this too seriously?' And, I would be like, 'I think we're taking this way too seriously!' (shouting and cheering) And, then it got big.

It was just a fun activity you do with your family and friends, you know, boring. I mean, before us, it wasn't even a game. (chanting 'Go Blue') (screams) (players yelling they're open) - Oh, look at that! Nope. They played Frisbee against other people. And then they did something that nobody saw coming. No only did they throw crazy, they started catching crazy, too. (groaning in pain) - They would throw the Frisbee while running. A lot of those moves are still used today. I mean, they would throw it really hard, or do crazy throws. Basically, they played Frisbee, but they got real into it. Daryl Derbin and Joe Butters looked at that disc and saw something revolutionary. I was like, this is cool, but what if we made this cooler? What if we made this ultimate? (techno beats) - The Frisbee had been around since 1938, but it was a toy. I remember I was playing with Joe, and we were getting into it, you know? And then, Joe said something I'll never forget. This isn't a game anymore, this is a sport. It was one of those moments where you just know. Also, I was wondering what you guys felt about the size of Duke’s student population and its effect on student life.- This episode of CC: Social Scene is based on your suggestions from made up Ultimate Frisbee moves. How big is Greek life on Duke’s social scene? I know a good amount of students are involved with it, but I’m also wondering how is the social life of independents (do they go to parties, does the greek life exclude people from Duke’s social scene, is there a feeling of a social hierarchy there, etc.). However, I have reserves about the greek system since my recent experience and am starting to feel that maybe greek life isn’t right for me. When I was applying to schools my senior year of hs, I was absolutely in love with Duke. For instance, it’s a fairly big school too and several of the clubs I’m interested in are extremely competitive to get into. Basically everything except for the academics. There are other things about my current college that I dislike. I’m going to try and get more involved with extracurriculars on campus this spring semester, but I still feel that my current school’s social scene isn’t for me. Parties supposedly are going to get more exclusive and not being in a fraternity, I fear, isn’t going to help the situation.

Greek life is pretty big on campus and I went for rush week but wasn’t able to get a bid. I’ve been trying really hard to find my social niche and, after a semester, However, I’m really unhappy at my current school.

The school I’m currently in is fine for those areas. I’m a prospective Econ/Math or Econ/CS major. I’m currently freshman at a top 15 university and I’m heavily considering applying to Duke as a transfer for next fall.Īt the school I’m currently in, I think the academics are great.
